Experts recommend waiting until the day after your missed period before taking a test. Much depends on your monthly menstrual cycle. If your periods are regular (every 28 to 30 days), you can test on the day of your missed period. If they’re irregular, wait a few more days.

There are three reasons why an ultrasound is vital:

  1. It determines if your pregnancy is developing or if you have had a miscarriage (over one in four pregnancies end in a miscarriage).
  2. You will learn how far along you are in your pregnancy.
  3. Although rare, some pregnancies form outside the uterus. This is a dangerous and sometimes life-threatening health concern. An ultrasound pinpoints the location of your pregnancy.

If you are sexually active, you could have a sexually transmitted infection (STI) and not know it. Many STIs have no immediate symptoms, but left untreated, they can cause serious health concerns. Getting tested regularly is critical to protect your sexual health.
